The One Toddler Sandal to Buy This Summer
We searched high and low and this is the one sandal we recommend buying this summer. Why? Avarcas (also known as Menorquinas) are a traditional shoe hand made on the island of Menorca, Spain since the 19th century. The quality and craftsmanship is obvious when you hold them, though the design is simple. Not only does this unisex style work for boys and girls, it can be worn casually or dressed up, to go with most anything.
For a toddler sandal it’s important to protect those toes, since they can still be a little clumsy on their feet. The Frailera style offers full heel and toe protection, with enough venting to keep the feet cool on warm days. The velcro strap gives easy on/off access and size adjustability. It also looks pretty cool.
So are they sustainable? Yep, these beauties are made with sustainability and longevity in mind. We got ours from Arvacas USA, founded by a Spanish couple that moved from Barcelona to LA in 2004 and work exclusively with PONS, a third generation family making arvacas since 1945. The leather and all raw materials are locally sourced in Spain. The vecchio leather comes from ethically raised livestock and is chrome dyed under the EU’s strict REACH standards and the rubber sole is made from recycled tires. You can also find the arvaca style on Smallable under the Minorquines brand, another family owned business.
We like the brown color because it goes with everything, but there are an impressive 15+ colors to choose from. To get the most wear, we recommend pairing with a sock or tight to bring you from spring through fall. To prevent stains, you can seal them with a water and stain repellent non-silicone leather spray and clean them with a soft cloth on occasion and a fragrance free baby wipe for the insole. The Arvacas USA website offers useful care instructions HERE.
If all of that isn’t enough, here’s some inspiration on how to wear them from Go Gently Nation’s SS20 collection.
