SHIPS Worldwide

basics, everyday, knitwear

This brand has a timeless appeal, with retro and vintage influence throughout. They sometimes play with volume on top, but stick mostly with straight legs and classic fits and styling. The primary palette focuses on various shades of mustard yellow, ruby red and all things green. Crisp cotton and soft organic pima rule the spring and summer seasons, while they’re known for their knits come fall. In addition to dressing babies through 11 years, there’s also accessories, home items and a line for women.

They use all natural materials, including 100% cotton, pima cotton, linen/cotton blends and organic cotton. They continue to increase their use of organic cotton, however it isn’t certified yet. All materials are sourced locally in Portugal and Peru and produced there as well. Both factories are certified fair trade and visited through their local agency to ensure proper oversight. Fabric scraps are upcycled into a collection of small accessories and seasonal items like doll clothes and ornaments. Packaging is all eco-friendly.

"We are always trying to improve our ethical practices for our company and are continually learning new things and ideas to help us in our efforts for sustainability. " - Makel Gardner

    THE PRODUCT

They use almost all eco-friendly materials. In the past few seasons, they've been increasing their use of organic cotton and it now accounts for about 75% of the collection. They also use linen and pima cotton. Fabrics are sourced locally to production. We weren't able to get accurate information on their dye process, but it does adhear to EU regulations.

    MATERIALS

"We use natural fibers for our fabrics. 100% cotton, pima cotton, linen/cotton blends and organic cottons. In our Spring collection we'll be about 75% organic cotton."

    DYE PROCESS

"Our agency handles the dye house so I'll have to ask them a little more on this process."

    ORIGIN

"Our fabrics are local to the factories. We choose fabrics that are natural fibers, soft to the touch and durable."

    THE PEOPLE

They monitor almost all parts of their supply chain. Their production is done in Portugal and Peru, with a team in Portugal closely monitoring the factory there. They visit Portugal twice a year. They have not been able to visit the factory in Peru. Both of the factories they work with are Fair Tradecertified, meaning they are required to meet rigorous social, environmental, and economic standards. The Portuguese factory also has to comply with EU standards.

As a company, they support several social justice issues and regularly have promotions to raise money to support various causes.

    SUPPLY CHAIN OVERSIGHT

"Our collections are produced in Portugal and Peru. We have a team in Portugal that monitors the productions closely and we fly there twice a year to design and check on the factory's progress. We have yet to visit the factory in Peru but it is a family-owned factory. The owner meets with us in the states twice a year so we can talk all things production."

    LABOR

"All our factories are certified fair trade. We choose factories that are up-front about their process and are trusted among other brands and our agency. "

    THE PLANET

Their team and shipping warehouse are both located in Utah and production is mostly in Europe. They have a local team in Portugal to manage day to day monitoring with the factory to reduce their carbon footprint.

They upcycle their fabric scraps to make small accessories and home goods.

They use eco-friendly packaging and recyclable materials for all shipments. They do use individual poly bags for shipments to wholesalers, but they are compostable. They also use all recycled paper in their marketing materials.

    UPCYCLING & RECYCLING

"We usually try to make small bonnets and scrap banners with the scraps!"

    PACKAGING

"We omit plastic wrap on products as much as possible. We wrap orders in craft paper and they are packaged in eco-brown paper shipping bags.

    TRANSPARENCY

Fin & Vince answered all our questions about company practices and were easy to reach for follow up. All quotes in this article are excerpts from our interview with Founder, Makel Gardner.
