Summer and Storm is a minimalist brand of elevated organic essentials that gives us luxe loungewear vibes in the best way. Based in Byron Bay, the Australian label was created in 2016 by sisters Daniella and Crystal and named after their children. They focus on selecting sustainable fabrics and ensuring ethical production with GOTS, WRAP and SEDEX certifications. Their collections are a perfect blend of comfort and style, choosing lush fabrics that play with texture and drape in a soft palette and oversized fit. They achieved cult status only a few years into their business with the launch of their beloved chunky knits, putting them on the radar of fashionable mamas worldwide.

The brand has continued to increase their use of sustainable fabrics, producing almost exclusively with certified organic cotton and utilizing environmentally friendly fabrics like linen and Econyl® (a regenerative nylon yarn). They also reduce fabric waste by producing smaller capsule collections throughout the year instead of following a strict seasonal calendar and utilizing leftover fabrics in production. By producing within GOTS, WRAP and SEDEX certified environments, they not only prioritize minimal environmental impact, but also the safety and welfare of the people making their clothes. They also stopped the use of plastic in their packaging, even from suppliers, and use recyclable products wherever possible.

INTERVIEW WITH DANIELLA RECH, CO-FOUNDER OF SUMMER & STORM
This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.
WHAT IS THE ETHOS OF SUMMER & STORM?
We believe in buying less, buying better. We believe in organic and natural fibers. We are also looking into new ways to constantly improve.
WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?
We are located in a small town called Murwillumbah surrounded by mountains around 30mins north of Byron Bay, Crystal and I (we both started the company with no experience in business).
WHERE ARE THE COLLECTIONS PRODUCED? ARE YOU ABLE TO CLOSELY MONITOR PRODUCTION?
We produce in India, Indonesia and China. We have great relationships with all the people we work with and visit the factories as much as we can.
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR OVERSTOCK OF MATERIALS AND FABRIC SCRAPS?
We never leave dead stock and always make something from left over fabric, so nothing goes to landfill. Because we don’t print, we are able to just recut a popular style from left over fabric. It’s good for us because we have ready to go fabric.
CAN YOU PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR PACKAGING?
So, we are in the process of making our warehouse plastic free. This takes time but we are very close to not having any plastic. Even biodegradable bags take energy to make. We get all our stock shipped to us in one large bag sewn from left over fabric we then store in labeled clear tubs.
