We were so sad to hear the news that Scandi Mini is closing down this month. Started in 2011, this independent online children’s shop has grown to be one of the largest in the UK. Too large, according to founder Gabrielle Spang, to continue managing happily. It begs the question, can too much of a good thing, sometimes just be too much?

There’s an intense pressure on online stores to offer more, stock more, be more. The big launches and demands can take their toll. Known for curating some of the best children’s brands on the market, in both fashion and home design, they’ve grown to offer over 175 global brands and developed a large international audience. They also operated a physical store for 4.5 years in London that they closed at the end of September, to refocus more efforts on ecommerce.

According to a statement released by Scandi Mini today, the current website was part of an expensive relaunch a few years back, that left them beholden to a custom interface that didn’t always function the way they wanted and required monthly upkeep. They plan on shutting down the site, regrouping and opening back up later this year on a new platform and with a smaller brand selection. We’ll keep you updated.

We wish Gabrielle and the Scandi Mini team nothing but the best and can’t wait to see what’s next when they’re ready.

Update: In November 2020 Scandi Mini opened the lifestyle web shop Scandi Minimal. The shop sells Scandi home products for everyday life. They focus on eco products with a positive social impact and Scandi inspired style. scandiminimal.com
