Five Suns, the Well Curated Shop from Porshia Hernandez, to Close

This one hurts. One of our favorite new shops to open in the last few years, Five Suns, announced April 6 that they are closing.

There were first rumblings back in February that owner Porshia Hernandez was considering closing up shop and was going to cut back for the season. Her statement today confirmed that she'll close the shop to focus on a more sustainable option for her family. “With heavy heart I’ve made the decision to close Five Suns, it’s no secret that I’m in the middle of a divorce, the journey of becoming a single mother hasn’t been easy and I know that I am not in a place to provide the service that is up to my standards for you all, I also know that I am needing to shift gears and put focus on a career path that can and will sustain my family as I enter this new season of life,” announced Porshia.

As a beloved member of the instagram Mom community, as much for her excellent style as for her outspoken support for social and racial injustice and just generally for being a rad straight forward person, the mama of 5 made headlines in 2020, when she successfully raised enough donations (through instagram) to realize her dream of opening her online children’s shop. A brick & mortar retail shop followed in Durham, NC in summer of 2021 and she also added women’s and home.

“To the amazing online Mom community and community in general, Five Suns would not be happening without the support and donations from you all. You believed in me and you helped this dream of mine come true, and for that I am forever grateful,” Porshia said.

A testament to just how much love there is for Porshia, since announcing the closing less than 24 hours ago, almost the entire shop’s inventory has sold out and she’s received an outpouring of support from close to 1000 fans on her social media.

The eco-friendly shop was like getting an insider’s peak into Porshia’s favorite things. She has a knack for selecting trend making brands and releasing in highly curated small batches throughout the year, instead of a strict seasonal calendar. Besides supporting ethical brands, she also regularly highlighted black owned businesses. While the Five Suns shop will be much missed, we look forward to following Porshia’s journey and what’s next for her.
